Hi Tucker, I am Dillon and I'm a 9 yr. old mini aussie and my little troublesome brother is Jack and he's 2. He's an aussie, also. I used to play with frisbee's all the time but my Mom won't let me anymore. I I like to jump really high and it has hurt my legs a lot. My Dr. says I can't do that anymore so we just play with tennis balls instead. We have a lot of bunny rabbits around here and Jack and I think it's really great to chase them. Our Mom tells us not to hurt them. Fat chance, we can't even come close to catching them. We always zig when we should zag. I like your pictures Tucker. Aussie's are pretty sharp looking huh? We are both blue merles but my little brother is lots lighter in color than me. It's thanksgiving so I'm going to go see if I can steal a little turkey while no one's looking. Thanks for a cool website. Maybe I'll get a new present soon.

My owner and I have started a new diet. My owner became increasingly fearful of commercial dog foods (especially after all the recalls!) so now cooks all of my food at home.
Does YOUR owner have a good list of foods to avoid? She KNOWS that I can't have chocolate (or sneak any of her coffee! - but I don't like it anyhow!) But some doggie recipes call for things like tomato paste or potatoes, and my owner says she has read that I shouldn't have those, either!
(She doesn't add onions or garlic to my food - and knows that grapes and raisins are very, very bad for me!) But she's afraid to follow recipes that use potatoes, tomatoes, and a few other things, because we've looked on the internet and can't find a good list of "no no foods!"
Even dog recipe books have recipes calling for tomatoes or potatoes, but we've both read that I should not have any "nightshade" vegetables - and both potatoes and tomatoes are nightshade veggies!

You look like a handsome guy! I wish you were closer, because I love to play and romp a lot and my owner has a bad back, too! We are trying to walk every day, though, so that helps....and I love to play ball and chase after my 'chewie' (a rope chew)!
thanks, Tucker!

Reply from Tucker:
Hi Belle,
Home made dog food - YUMMY!!! It is the green parts of the potato, rhubarb, and tomato plants (stems, leaves, even green potato skins) that are considered toxic because they contain solanine. This substance can produce significant gastrointestinal and central nervous system effects. Ripe red tomatoes, the part of the plant typically called for in recipes, are not toxic. Likewise, cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for dogs and are actually quite nutritious and digestible. A good reference source is www.aspca.org.
Happy playing and Happy Thanksgiving. And remember - even though people food can be SOOO tempting, it's really better to stick with your own food.

Reply from Tucker: Glad you liked my site. I like your "breed name". I bet we could have fun "clowning" together!

Reply from Tucker: ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America)is one organization that sanctions many types of competitions. There are trials where you can herd sheep, or cattle, or ducks. ASCA's website is www.asca.org. Email stockdog@asca.org for more information on stock dog trials.

My name is Bella and I am a Miniature Tri-colored Aussie like Tucker. My human adores me and has found that to burn off alot of my energy she uses the "Chuck-it" ball throwing device. She used to buy the inexpensive frisbees a dozen at a time but they wear out just from me catching them and I almost always catch them. I like frisbees and balls and squirrels and my cat Co-Co....I also LOVE going to the "doggie beach" here in Florida to swim.I have a huge back yard and my human is thinking about raising chickens so that I can have a job to do (herding the chickens). I wish all dogs could have good/ loving homes.Soon I am going to take my Canine Good Citizen test and work as a Therapy Dog. I could make alot of sick kids real happy. Bella.____________ ________________________________________________________________________ **Reply from Tucker: If you learn to herd DUCKS, you could compete in trials. Also, try the Ruff Wear Hover Craft - I too could destroy most frisbees - but not this one!!

Hi Tucker, In your October Newsletter, and in your article titled Adopt a Shelter, you talk about the number of people, affected by the economy, who must give up their pets. They feel they can no longer care for them. How sad. What can we do?

Reply from Tucker: Your question shows such compassion.

For all who read this note - There are more emails from Alberta on the Tips page, in the article Adopt a Shelter. Please let us here at The Sensible Dog know if you have any ideas or comments - we will be sure that Alberta gets them.

I have a male Australian shepard, red heeler mix. He was born on 5-06-08. We have found out that he is deaf. Do you have any advice on training. Any thoughts would be great. Thank You! Holly_Bushy@hotmail.com

Comment from Tucker: Hi Holly, I'm so sorry to hear that your little friend is deaf. (That often happens to Aussies who are bred merle-to-merle.) There are a couple of positive things about your situation. One is that you have found out now. I play with a Maltese who was almost 2 years ago when they determined that she was deaf. Another positive things is that dogs can learn hand signals. An important thing for him to learn right now is to look at you. You can feed him a treat every time he looks you right in the eye. You can even feed him an entire meal that way! And he is probably very aware of things like vibration - you can use that. Once you have trained him to give you his undivided attention, you can start using signals instead of words for other training. I know of a deaf Aussie that is trained in agility. It will take patience and creativity, but you can train him. (The Aussie part is probably very smart!!)

**** Anyone, who has suggestions or encouragement to offer Holly, can leave a message here or send us an email via the Contact Us page. We will make sure that Holly gets them. ****

Hi Tucker: I'm trying to find a french quotation that goes something like this. "The more I know dogs the less I like man" Can you give me a hand. Many thanks, John jbuono3344@ yahoo.com

Comment from Tucker: Hi John, Here's what I found -

"The more I know about men the more I like dogs." Gloria Allred

The More I Know Men, the More I Love Dogs (Paperback) by Fabienne Villette (Author)

And a T-shirt at zazzle.com - "Mieux que je connais les hommes, plus j'aime mon chien"

Hope that helps.

Answer back from John: Many thanks. Have a good day and stay healthy. John

Hi Tucker

My name is Gypsey and I am a Aussie too - red merle. I live down under - Melbourne, Australia. Funny enough there are not alot of Aussie who live down here.

Like you I love to run especially after sea gulls. When I am out for a walk I love to chase them.

I am 9 years old now and so I have decided that it is best for me to only run at a slow pace which my owner Michelle is fine with LOL.

Your website is great, practical - if only every dog owner was this sensible.

Have a great day

(Comment from Tucker: Hi Gypsey, Thanks for the kind words. I wish that we lived closer. I'm sure we could be good friends.)

My dog (Scrappy) and I have been walking for several years. We walk at least 45 minutes to an hour everyday. Just last week, we start walking and for no apparent reason, stops puts his tail between his legs, ears pinned back and won’t walk. There are no other dogs around, no other animals, people, etc. I try talking to him and it doesn’t help. I finally say okay, Scrappy let’s go home and he turns around and runs back. Same thing happens when we are at a park. He stops, I do the same thing and tell him, okay, let’s go back to the car. He runs back to the car! Scrappy is 5 years old, American Staffordshire mix, just went to the vet for his shots and a checkup. Help – what could be his problem?

When my mother was near death with Leukemia, she did not want to be parted from her old friend a cross of unknown origin, who was also near the end of his life,( they died the same week) She asked our Paster if dogs went to Heavan. The wise old man answered, " Mrs. Stevenson, would it be Heaven withöut them?'

(Response- Have you read the book by Gary Kurz, "Cold Noses at the Pearly Gates"? He gives a very studied Biblical response to that question. That book gave Sally much comfort after the sudden loss of Tucker's predecessor.)

My sweet dog (God spelled backwards) is my service dog and is so attentive you might think it is a crummy way to live a dog's life. But when I look into her eyes, I gaze at the pride she has for having a "job".

My feelings are all things for the beautiful species should be balanced in their lives by having a job. A different and more special being evolves this way. I love my dogs! (I am sure they LOVE me!)

(Response: Hi - Your dog doesn't have a "crummy" life at all - it sounds like a wonderful life. And I'm sure you are LOVED! My "job" is being Sally's friend and almost constant companion. I encourage her to exercise - with me, of course. I love my job and wouldn't want it any other way! Tucker)
