Who is your logo dog?

His full name is "Watermark's Never Tuckers Out"; his call name is "Tucker" .
Tucker is a five year old, black tri, Australian Shepherd.  Stan and Sally purchased him as a puppy.
His energy level and the benefit of a morning walk  led to the creation of the dvd
The Workout Walk with The Sensible Dog.
Maybe he's not  "sensible", but he is very bright, active, funny, and much loved.

Does The Sensible Dog support any charities?

We are often asked “Does the Sensible Dog support any charities?”.  Yes, we do - two.

Sally has  supported Operation Christmas Child for many years, and continues to do so now with a portion of the proceeds from each dvd sale. (Go to www.samaritanspurse.org for more information about  the wonderful work this group does for children around the world and how you can help.)

In honor of  Tucker’s predecessors (Brodie who had Addison’s disease and Cooper who died of cancer)-
a  portion of each sale from other Sensible Dog products  goes to support The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation.

Do you really do these exercises?

I am asked this question often.  Yes, Tucker and I try to do this program 4 times a week. This isn't just a "product for sale"; this is the way I live my life.  I will admit that I don't always do the pushups while outside, especially if the weather is bad, or the bugs are bad, or ...  That's not my favorite part, but I know that they are important.   I do try to do them in the house before my cool down.

For whom are these exercises appropriate?

This is a basic exercise program that would be a benefit to many people.  It is not just for someone like me with back problems.  As with any exercise program, you should consult with your physician before you start.

Do I have to use a hands-free leash?

I guess you could try to do the exercises with another type of leash. I use the hands-free Buddy System leash. It makes everything so easy.  There is an article on the tips page that talks in more detail about the hands-free leash.

Can I do these exercises in the city?

You can do these exercises anywhere that you walk your dog.  I realize how blessed I am that I can just walk out my door and enjoy miles of the beautiful Vermont countryside.  Tucker and I have traveled  extensively and have done these exercises in parks, on beaches, as well as along city streets

What does Tucker do when you're standing still?

Part of the benefit of the daily walk with your dog is the "structure", not just the movement.  Tucker has had to work on "self-control" by sitting quietly beside me, while I do the few parts of the program (like the squats) where I am not walking forward.  He got used to this very quickly. Actually,  I think he enjoys this part because I let him sniff around a little.  The program also includes parts where the pace is slower than other parts.  This too is good practice for him.

Is this the only exercise that Tucker gets?

Many people seem to worry about Tucker.  No, this is not the only form of exercise that he gets.  He plays frisbee in our yard - and is really getting good at catching it. (In the winter, he catches snow balls instead.)  We have a couple acres of meadow where he can run.   In the warm weather, he gets to go down to our pond for a "splash" - he doesn't like to swim, so he justs sits in the shallow part.  Actually, I guess most of the exercise here happens on his run down to the pond and then back to the house.  We go to an agility class once a week and have  equipment that is usually  set up in the yard  (except for the winter.)  In the house, he is busy trying to keep two cats in line.

What do you do with the weights when you are not using them?

In the video, you can see that I used wrist weights  that fastened by velcro.  They can be easily velcroed around the belt of the Buddy System hands-free leash.  You can also condition your dog so that it can wear a pack and carry the weights for you. (Remember that a healthy mature dog can carry 20 - 25 % of its weight.)
