I volunteer to walk dogs at a shelter and sometimes have great difficulty getting dogs to sit. I am sure they have never been taught even though they are several years old. The dogs don't seem to get the idea when I press on their rear and tell them to sit. Their back legs are like rebar and do not bend. I have a feeling that pushing hard would not have successful results and be frustrating for dogs and me. Please share your ideas. Thanks

If you push on a dogs butt to get him to sit he usually will just push back. He doesn't understand why/ what you want. I would suggest you bring little treats in a treat bag with you. When walking him, stop, give him 1 treat, just to show him what you've got. Then try holding the treat above his head and slowly draw your hand toward his backend. He will automatically sit in order to follow the treat. The minute his butt even starts to touch the ground give him the treat and praise him. Repeat frequently until he gets it. At that point you can start to incorporate a word with the action. Watch him carefully to begin with . Before trying this you might want to find out if he's a food aggressive dog. If he's not then this should work but will need to be re-inforced each time you're with him. Don't expect miracles, he's in a tough spot right now. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I agree with the treat method, but if you don't have treats, instead of pushing on them, you can put your arm behind their knees and tuck them into a sit. It seems to work much better than trying to push since they push back. They are much more likely to give with the pressure and sit. It's a smooth motion with your hand on their back, then moving your arm into position. I hope that is explained well enough. Good luck and thank you for helping shelter dogs.
