These tips are warnings about an alarming and growing trend in the news - the theft of dogs, for resale for a high price. There are the standard precautions that dog owners should take, like not leaving your dog tied outside a store. (More and more pet friendly stores will let you bring your dog in with you, while you get that cup of coffee- especially if you ask.) Here are some ideas that I hadn’t thought of before now.
1 - Be careful if a stranger asks too many questions about your dog - like how much does one cost. And NEVER let them take a picture, especially not a picture of themselves with your dog. They could later use that picture to try to prove ownership. (This will be tough - I know how much I love to talk about Tucker.)
2 - When you travel, have your ownership papers with you. Make sure they have a good description and indicate unique markings.
3- If you go to a dog park, where you let your dog run free, go with a friend. One of you can stand near exit, so that no one can try to leave with your dog.
4- I’ve talked before about verifying that the microchip registry has the correct information about you and your dog. It is now recommended that you have a reading taken of the chip itself. Tucker is due for his annual appointment soon, so I’m going to have the vet take a reading.
Moer tips will be added each week of February.
